99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Clockspring R&R.?

My airbag warning light and chime comes on when making a turn. Then goes out after a while. From my research on the web I have found info relating to the steering wheel clockspring that seems to be the problem and has been on the Grand Cherokee line. Don't think it's the ACM ( Airbag Control Module) Question: How difficult is it to remove and replace this unit? Dealer has told me it's too risky and dangerous for the backyard mechanic to perform. I'm mechanically inclined and feel I could do it myself. Just don't want the airbag to explode in my face when removing it. If there is anyone who has personal experience with this issue, any and all info would greatly be appreciated. Thanks
