German teenage customs?

So we had an mom and her son come and stay with us for a week, and at the end the mom gave me a really big hug, so I gave her a big hug, and then I gave her son a hug too (who is 17, also my age) just to say goodbye, bcs that is what the mom had done with me. It was a pretty awkward hug, and I was wondering if in germany, that would be considered weird. I dunno, I was just saying goodbye, bcs I will probably never see them again. Was it weird for me to hug?
