My a/c max is coming out of my defrost. They said I need a new electronic control head for a f150. ?

I have a F150 Lariat. When you turn on the Max a/c it comes out of the defrost. We took it to get checked out they said it was my electronic control head. Which of course if I buy it new its about 500 bucks. Does anyone have any other ideas what it might be.
